Programme – in English

Monday, March 4, 2019

from 6 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Vertical Development in Leadership

with Chuck Palus, Senior Fellow

of the Center for Creative Leadership

Co-organised by Dana Lefeuvre, Jo Leymarie, Gabriela Buettner and Gaëlle Coqueblin

This webinar is an introduction to vertical leadership development, as based on the work of Bill Torbert. Vertical development (also known as stage theory, and constructive-developmental theory) began with the work of Jean Piaget with children and has since been applied to adulthood. According to vertical development, people can experience at least seven transformations during their lives in the basic ways they think and act (known as “action logics.”) Later, more mature action logics enable successful engagement with more complex challenges such as organizational transformation. Participants have the opportunity to self-estimate their stage of development using the Transformations™ tool kit in a real-time exercise.

We look at recent insights on how to frame and introduce vertical development into leadership contexts, including scaffolding (vertical is implicit in design and analysis) and spotlighting (vertical is explicitly taught). From there we expand the scope to define and explore leadership culture, and how vertical development operates at the collective levels of groups, organizations, communities, and societies.

KEY OUTCOMES FOR ATTENDEES

  • Self-assessment of vertical development stage and future developmental goals.
  • Awareness of the Seven Transformations of Leadership Model of Bill Torbert and colleagues and the implications for leaders.
  • Insights into applications of the model ranging from individual coaching to the vertical transformation of leadership cultures in organizations.
