Riddell Afternoon

We are pleased to welcome back our favourite Professor of Neuroscience, Dr Patricia Riddell. We are experimenting a new format with two identical half day workshops meaning that more people can get to hear what Patricia has to share, whilst still enjoying an intimate workshop experience.

Please make sure that you only sign up for one workshop – either the morning OR the afternoon – the content will be the same for both workshops.

ICF Paris Île de France proposes

ICF Paris International half-day Workshop

Unconscious Bias and the Brain

with Dr Patricia Riddell, Professor of Applied Neuroscience

Thursday 16th May 2019

Session 2. From 2.30 pm to 6.00 pm

at Cocoon Space, Salle Auguste, 11 Avenue Philippe Auguste, 75011 Paris

(Métro Nation)

Programme – in English

Co-organised by Jo Leymarie, Gaëlle Coqueblin,

Gabriela Buettner, and Manuela Marquis

This event is targeted at coaches who are interested in the brain and want to understand how current neuroscience can help us to tackle unconscious bias.

Tackling unconscious bias has become one of the hottest topics in organisations and this has generated lots of training designed to help reduce this. And yet unconscious biases still exist. Clearly they are very hard to budge.

Neuroscience research has provided us with an understanding of what unconscious bias is and how it emerges in the brain.  By considering the evolutionary and developmental roots of unconscious bias, we can find better ways to tackle this. In this half-day workshop, we will explore the origins of unconscious bias in the brain and will use this understanding to provide tips and techniques to help tackle our own and others’ unconscious biases.

The aims of the workshop are:

  • to provide a basic working knowledge of how unconscious bias develops in the brain
  • to demonstrate how this knowledge can help us to develop better techniques to tackle unconscious bias

At the end of the workshop:

  • You will have a better understanding of the development of unconscious bias.
  • You will have explored why we have these, their costs and benefits
  • You will have looked at how you can help people discover their own unconscious biases
  • You will have tips and techniques for how to begin to tackle unconscious biases through this better understanding of their function
  • You will have explored some of the obstacles to tackling unconscious biases and how to address these

The masterclass will provide plenty of opportunity to practice new ideas and techniques, to network with other people who are interested in coaching and the brain, and to ask questions of an expert neuroscientist with many years of experience of research and teaching in this field.

Speaker profile

Patricia Riddell is Professor of Applied Neuroscience and an expert in the fields of coaching and leadership. She has degrees from the University of Glasgow, Imperial College, London and the University of Oxford.  One of her main interests is the ways in which neuroscience can be applied in the business world, supporting and extending our understanding of human behaviour. She collaborates with colleagues at Ashridge and Henley Business Schools researching aspects of leadership.  As a result of these collaborations she has developed a unique combination of skills that allows her to bring neuroscience solutions to individuals and organisations.

Patricia provides access to Applied Neuroscience through customised training, consultancy and public programmes. She brings both her training as an NLP practitioner and her neuroscience background to this work.  This allows her to combine the latest neuroscience with practical interventions to immediately impact real world challenges facing individuals, teams and organisations.

The current revolution in our understanding of the complexities of human behaviour provides an opportunity to use our brains better. Understanding and communicating this information requires a new breed of professional both with expertise in neuroscience and experience in the ways in which neuroscience can be used to tackle real world issues. Patricia’s range of experience and expertise is exquisitely suited to this role. She enjoys working at the interface between science and the business world, and finds this role challenging and exciting.
